Our Farm
Traditional farming, done right
Smeaton Hall Farm is a working farm across 200 acres of Lake District countryside. We raise sheep and cattle, manage hay meadows, tend a kitchen garden and orchard, and care for the hedgerows and woodland that make this landscape so special.
Our farming blends time-tested tradition with thoughtful modern practice — every decision, from grazing rotations to lambing schedules, is made with the health of our animals and land in mind.
Meet the animals we care for
Every animal at Smeaton Hall Farm is raised with care, room to roam, and a diet suited to the Lake District landscape.
Herdwick Sheep
Hardy, fell-bred sheep perfectly suited to the Lake District's slopes and weather.
Grazing Cattle
Pasture-raised cattle rotated across our meadows to protect soil health year-round.
Free-Range Poultry
Our hens roam freely across the farmyard, producing fresh eggs daily.
Our Farm Dogs
Our friendly farm dogs are part of the team, helping keep an eye on the flock across the fells.
Caring for the land as much as the livestock
- ✓Rotational grazing to protect soil structure and pasture health
- ✓Hedgerow and woodland conservation to support local wildlife
- ✓Minimal use of artificial fertilisers, favouring natural composting
- ✓Water conservation and careful management of becks and streams
- ✓Supporting biodiversity through wildflower margins and native planting
We believe farming and conservation go hand in hand — a healthy farm depends on a healthy landscape.
Seasonal Farm Work
Life at Smeaton Hall Farm follows the rhythm of the seasons — each one bringing its own work and its own rewards.
Lambing Season
Our busiest season — round-the-clock care for new lambs and calves across the farm.
Hay Making & Shearing
Long days in the fields cutting and baling hay, plus shearing our flock of Herdwick sheep.
Harvest & Tupping
Harvesting the kitchen garden and orchard, and preparing the flock for the next breeding season.
Feeding & Maintenance
Hand-feeding livestock through the colder months and maintaining walls, fences and buildings.
